Grüner Veltliner „Selection“ 2022

The grapes for this wine have been harvested at five different dates selectively from two different VT vineyards at the Csobanc mountain near lake Balaton in Hungary.

Only the best and perfectly ripe grapes have been selected and harvested at each time. As usual at Villa Tolnay, the whole harvest has been made manually. After the grapes arrived at the pressing house, they were quality-selected once again to ensure only the very best berries are making it into the press.
In the press we made a short maceration for about 2 to 3 hours to extract as much aromas as possible but preventing too much extraction of tannins.

The pressing process was very gentle and careful for about 3 to 4 hours.
The must was then naturally sedimented for 12 hours and withdrawn from the sedimentation tank slightly “milky” to ensure maximum richness of the must.

Spontaneous fermentation without any additions in steel tanks and Stockinger oak barrels. Two months after fermentation the wines were pulled of the yeast and received a minimal dosage of sulfur, actually the first and only intervention into the must and wine since the harvest.

The wines then matured for another 5 month before they were blended together and left for homogenization for another 2 month in steel tank. Production of 4500 bottles.


The „new“ label was designed especially for this “Selection” wine but will be used as well in the future for such classified wines.

Greenish yellow color. In the nose citrus, grapefruit, fresh quince with a slight hint of clementine, complex and multi-faceted, fine volcanic minerality and nuances of tobacco and spices.

On the palate creamy fresh, juicy and slightly salty, with great grip, beautiful smooth tanning structure, again citrus, grapefruit and a hint of quince. Long and fine spicy aftertaste.

This wine shows itself in burgundy-ish, or as we call it, in the new-pannonia-ish style.
